Road Technology -  A Swedish Network of Excellence

The task of the Road Technology Network of Excellence is to generate knowledge to facilitate the development of road construction, maintenance and operation and render this more efficient. The ambition is that the life cycle costs for the roads of tomorrow will be as low as possible. At the same time, the roads constructed and maintained must be safe and sustainable, through undertaking environmental measures to limit noise pollution and particulate matter, through the protection of groundwater supplies and through a reduction in the use of non-renewable natural resources.

The Road Technology network comprises ten different R&D groups. The network  endeavour to develop new technology and methods as well as prognosis instruments that can be used to analyse the impact of such things as climate change (high water levels), increasing traffic volumes and new materials.

It is also important to create incentives for "everyday" developments. This can be achieved for example through formulating performance requirements and through developing methods to verify these.

Bridge/Tunnel -  A Swedish Network of Excellence

Bridges and tunnels are key components in transport systems, advanced technological challenges as well as important architectural landmarks in both rural and urban areas. The network Bridge/Tunnel gathers leading Swedish competence within research and practice to develop architectural and structural design, construction and operation.

The network comprises eight different R&D groups. New concepts, improved performance of materials and products, efficient production processes and rational operation are supported through joint efforts in knowledge and innovation. Priorities are based on needs, expectations and requirements from end users, companies and authorities. The network has a clear international focus on knowledge and innovation watch, participation in international projects and establishment of strategic alliances with international networks of excellence

The Celest FUD Centre -  A Swedish Network of Excellence
Celest - Centre for Long-term Effective and Sustainable road Transport system

The aim of CELEST is that through its research it shall extend knowledge of information on which decisions are based, the decision-making process and follow-up on decisions. This research involves CELEST further developing methods and models as well as information on which decisions are based, all of which is needed by the Swedish Road Administration and other decision-makers. This network of expertise consists of four different research and development groups.

Projects under way within CELEST deal with such subjects as the development of analytical tools for infrastructure decisions, sensitivity analyses of socio-economic calculations, socio-economic evaluations of issues such as traffic safety, air pollution and noise, pricing of infrastructure utilisation and the modelling and analysis of a sustainable transport and land utilisation system.

CELEST's vision is to attract gifted researchers and to undertake research, development, demonstration activities and research education of a high scientific quality and with a high degree of relevance to policy for the transport sector.

FUD-centret Sir-C, Swedish Intermodal Transport Research Centre
Swedish Intermodal Transport Research Centre - Sir-C

Sir-C is a RD&D network of excellence which develops knowledge to improve the competitiveness of intermodal transports.

The Sir-C network primarily works with theoretical development, but also produce best practice solutions. The principal sphere of operation includes the development of theories and methodologies for commercial and socio-economic consideration. The Network are also engaged in market and technology issues in addition to questions relating to organisation and management.

The Sir-C network comprises eight different R&D groups that collaborate to develop and implement different project ideas. The network function as a tool for the Swedish Road and National Rail Administrations to enable them to achieve their articulated goals. The research is also intended to strengthen the competitiveness of intermodal transports in Europe.
